Array imaging of localized objects in homogeneous and heterogeneous media

چکیده
Abstract. We present a comprehensive study of the resolution and stability properties of sparse promoting optimization theories applied to narrow band array imaging of localized scatterers. We consider homogeneous and heterogeneous media, and multiple and single scattering situations. When the media is homogeneous with strong multiple scattering between scatterers, we give a non-iterative formulation to find the locations and reflectivities of the scatterers from a nonlinear inverse problem in two steps, using either single or multiple illuminations. We further introduce an approach that uses the top singular vectors of the response matrix as optimal illuminations, which improves the robustness of sparse promoting optimization with respect to additive noise. When multiple scattering is negligible, the optimization problem becomes linear and can be reduced to a hybrid-l1 method when optimal illuminations are used. When the media is random, and the interaction with the unknown inhomogeneities can be primarily modeled by wavefront distortions, we address the statistical stability of these methods. We analyze the fluctuations of the images obtained with the hybrid-l1 method, and we show that it is stable with respect to different realizations of the random medium provided the imaging array is large enough. We compare the performance of the hybrid-l1 method in random media to the widely used Kirchhoff migration and the multiple signal classification methods.

Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...

Fractured reservoirs contain about 85 and 90 percent of oil and gas resources respectively in Iran. A comprehensive study and investigation of fractures as the main factor affecting fluid flow or perhaps barrier seems necessary for reservoir development studies. High degrees of heterogeneity and sparseness of data have incapacitated conventional deterministic methods in fracture network modelin...
متن کاملTheory and applications of time reversal and interferometric imaging
In time reversal, an array of transducers receives the signal emitted by a localized source, time reverses it and re-emits it into the medium. The emitted waves back-propagate to the source and tend to focus near it. In a homogeneous medium, the cross-range resolution of the refocused field at the source location is λ0L/a, where λ0 is the carrier wavelength, L is the range and a is the array ap...
متن کاملTime Reversal for Waves in Random Media
In time reversal acoustics experiments, a signal is emitted from a localized source, recorded at an array of receivers-transducers, time reversed, and finally re-emitted into the medium. A celebrated feature of time reversal experiments is that the refocusing of the re-emitted signals at the location of the initial source is improved when the medium is heterogeneous. Contrary to intuition, mult...
